PROJECT - EMBEDDED WALL DESIGN
Project Brief:
You are required to design an embedded wall to support a 6m deep excavation. The wall needs to be designed to meet the following specifications:
• Water mains running behind wall, located 2.5 m away
• Active earth pressure conditions only. No landslide loads
• 25kPa road traffic
• Maximum allowable lateral deformation 40mm
• Long term / permanent wall
• Assume that the initial water table is 2 m below the ground surface
References:
The retention system can be designed using the following references:
• Borehole to establish the ground conditions
• The wall may comprise any material, e.g. concrete piles, steel sheets, and any form of retention you wish, e.g. cantilever wall, anchored pile wall, contiguous bored pile etc.
• Software - Wallap, RS2 and SlopeW
Assessment:
• Determine the retention system characteristics, i.e. construction material, dimensions of the wall, e.g. 600mm diameter concrete piles at 3m spacing, with anchors at 6m spacing, to ensure a lateral deformation of 50mm can be met.
• Using Wallap and RS2, assess the induced bending moments and shear forces in the wall and compare outcomes between the two software
• Prove that the system can achieve an overall FOS of 1.5 in SlopeW
