Question: We have argued that, in the absence of transaction costs and taxes, dividend policy is irrelevant and should not affect shareholder wealth. At the same time, we have shown that share prices should be determined by the present value of future dividend payments. Carefully explain how you can reconcile these positions which, at first glance, may appear to be contradictory.
