Solve all five of the following matrix-type puzzles. Post your solutions and briefly explain your reasoning process
#1 Alonzo, Kurt, Rudolf and Willard are four creative artists of great talent. One is a dancer, one is a painter, one is a singer, and one is a writer.
1. Alonzo and Rudolf were in the audience the night the singer made his debut on the concert stage.
2. Both Kurt and the writer have had their portraits painted from life by the painter.
3. The writer, whose biography of Willard was a best-seller, is planning to write biography of Alonzo.
4. Alonzo has never heard of Rudolf.
What is each man's artistic field?
2. In a certain flight crew, the positions of pilot, copilot, and flight engineer are held by three persons, Allen, Brown, and Carr, though not necessarily in that order. The copilot, who is an only child, earns the least. Carr, who married Brown's sister, earns more than the pilot. What position does each of the three persons hold?
3. Adams, Brown and Clark have for pets a dog, an elk and a fox. The men's hobbies are golf, hockey (on ice) and ice-fishing. Clark never has anything to do with ice, even in his drinks. Adams and the dog owner watched the hockey player as he received his league's Most Valuable Player award. The hockey player then rode the bus back to town with the elk owner. Determine the pet and hobby of each man.
4. Abe, Boz and Cal are the best students in their class, ranking first, second and third (not necessarily in that order). Their favorite fruits are apricots, bananas and cantaloupes. Only bananas are yellow; only apricots are fuzzy; and only cantaloupes are rich in vitamin C. The top ranked student likes only fruit rich in vitamin C. Abe was ranked above Cal but below the cantaloupe lover. Cal gave away the apricots on his salad because he hated them. Identify the class rank and favorite fruit of each person.
5. Six friends, Al, Beth, Chet, Dawn, Ed, and Fran decided to rent a house together while going to college. To make things easier on themselves they agree to divide responsibilities. The basic chores are: washing and drying clothes; food shopping; cooking; kitchen cleaning; house cleaning; and yard work. Discover the chores of all the friends.
1. Al had allergies that wouldn't let him work with either pollens or house dust.
2. Beth had sensitive skin that wouldn't let her handle chemicals like detergents, cooking materials or fertilizers.
3. Chet tutored the people who did the cleaning and washing in calculus.
4. Dawn's twin sister had dated Al, the cook and the kitchen cleaner.
5. Fran was so fair that she got sunburns from 100-watt bulbs; thus she couldn't take an outside job.
