An important component of quality improvement is a dynamic process that uses multiple quality improvement tools. Given the quality and safety issue in your healthcare organization, you will analyze the various aspects of the tools and methods used for assessing and improving the quality of healthcare services.
Methods: You have participated in quality improvement teams in the past and know that the two most common methods used for assessing and improving quality in your organization are the plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycle and Lean Six Sigma. You decide to present each of these methods that your team intends to use to the CEO by addressing the following:
Discuss the purpose of quality assessment and improvement methods. Specifically, the CEO would like to know how these methods are used to accomplish the Institute of Medicine's "six aims for improvement" in healthcare quality.
The CEO is unfamiliar with these methods and is interested in knowing the similarities and differences between methods. You will want to differentiate between the two methods and how each one is used in healthcare.
In order for the CEO to fully understand how these methods will be used by your team, you will illustrate the steps for using each method. Provide an example to refer to while describing the process for using each method. For instance, consider what your team might do during each of the four phases of the PDSA cycle methodology and the five phases of the Lean Six Sigma process to assess and improve the number of fall-related incidents. The most common tools that your organization has used in the past include brainstorming, flowcharts, fishbone diagrams, and SWOT analyses. Since you are presenting to the CEO, there is limited time to explain each tool, so you decide to select two that your team intends to use and address the following in your presentation:

Determine the output or information provided by each tool. This will be essential in determining what relevant information you will assess and use to achieve your quality improvement aims.
