Machine Design Project -

The following 6-foot long W-section beam assembly is to be bolted to the vertical face of an HP8x36 section column using UNC SAE grade 5 bolts. The W-beam is loaded with a 400lb/ft distributed load and 2kip point load applied at the end. A ½" thick plate the width of the flange is to be welded to the end of the W-beam to provide a mating surface and may be extended above and below the beam flange if necessary. In all cases the total cost of material and fabrication is to be minimized. You are tasked with the following:

a) Determine the minimum weight W-section beam that can carry the load with a safety factor of 9/5ths.

b) Design and appropriate bolt pattern to carry the loads between the ½" plate and the column with a safety factor of 2.5.

c) Design and specify an appropriate weld to carry the loads between the beam and the ½" plate with a safety factor of 2.0.

d) Detailed drawings of the bolt pattern and weld specification are required along with a short written description of your design, all analysis, and a BOM.
