Problem - Three SAE Class 4.8 bolts (Sp = 310 MPa) are used to attach a rigid beam to a rigid support structure. A load P of 1000 N is applied as shown (assume no friction between the plates and neglect axial stress caused by the tightening of the bolts).

a) Determine the load on each bolt.

b) Determine the minimum standard size bolt required from the Table provided.

Table - Basic Dimensions of ISOP Metric Screw Threads

Coarse Threads
Niminal Diameter d(mm) Pitch p (mm) Minor Diameter dr (mm) Stress Area At (mm2)
3 0.5 2.39 5.03
3.5 0.6 2.76 6.78
4 0.7 3.14 8.78
5 0.8 4.02 14.2
6 1 4.77 20.1
7 1 5.77 28.9
8 1.25 6.47 36.6
