Question : A 1020 CD steel shaft is to transmit 50 hp while rotating at 1500 rpm.

(a) Determine the minimum diameter for the shaft to provide a minimum factor of safety of 3.5 based on the maximum-shear stress (MSS) theory.

(b) Plot the failure envelope and the load line.

(c) For the diameter that you found in part (a), will failure occur according to MSS theory if the required horsepower is doubled (H - 100 hp) and the rotation speed is halved (750 rpm)? Where is the new point on the load line?
