In order to determine the maximum dry unit weight of the soil previously classified as Silty Sand (SM), on March, we conducted a series of laboratory compaction experiments using Modified Proctor Compaction Device. The procedure followed is outlined in the class handout provided to us. Using the equations provided in the handout, the Proctor Compaction Curve and the Zero Air Voids (ZAV) line were created for the soil specimen. From the tests conducted, we determined that the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content are 126pcf and 11%, respectively. The compaction curve intersects the Zero Air Voids (ZAV), which should not be the case. Possible reason for such error could be specific gravity of soil. However, for the specific gravity of 2.60, the Zero Air Voids line is above the compaction curve for all data points. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The assistance provided during this laboratory procedure was highly appreciated.
