A steel shaft has fatigue strength of 300 MPa for 80,000 cycles of fully reversed loading. The same shaft fails by fatigue in 10,000 cycles at a load of 400 MPa. Determine the maximum cyclic stress that can be applied on the shaft if the shaft should have a life of 200,000 cycles. Is the endurance limit equal to half the ultimate strength in this case?
