Assessment brief
This assignment requires you to demonstrate an appreciation of the key areas of manufacturing technology covered in the module including material selection, manufacturing methods, automation and CAD/CAM. In this work, you are required to show how these areas are all linked together in the process of design and manufacture of a specific product or component.
Your group case study work will have been assessed giving 20% of total marks, and the remaining 80% will be from this assignment.
Assignment
Pick just ONE of the items listed below and identify it by means of a sketch or other image:
• Toothbrush (including bristles)
• Skis
• Train wheel
• Motorcycle rear sprocket
Question 1
Using a systematic approach (e.g. one used during the module or similar), choose and justify a suitable material(s) for your chosen component. In your analysis, you need to show how you arrived at this choice and why you excluded any other materials. What would be the most suitable primary manufacturing processes for this item and why? In arriving at your choice of the primary process, you should support your answer through the consideration of manufacturing process selection factors (e.g. material type, product shape, economics, etc.)
Question 2
It is likely that some CAD/CAM applications will have been used in the design and manufacture of the product you have chosen. Such applications include CAD analysis/testing, CADCAM for prototype development and manufacture, mould design, CAM machining, etc.
Identify and discuss 3 such applications in the context of your product and the benefits you would obtain from each of these applications. For example, would you use computer aided design analysis on your component? If so, what properties or aspects would you analyze and why?
Question 3
Determine the manufacturing route of your component from raw material stage to fully finished form in line with your primary process identified above using a block diagram or a flow chart to support your answer. Identify what steps along the manufacturing route you would automate and why? What type of automation facility or machinery (e.g. robot/type of robot, conveyors...etc.) would you employ along these steps and why?
Learning outcome 1: Appraise the significance of current Manufacturing Technology in the context of Engineering Business Management
Learning outcome 2: Evaluate and contrast various materials and manufacturing processes that are most commonly used in manufacturing industry
Learning outcome 3: Creatively demonstrate material and process selection concepts to enable a more scientific approach to material and process selection decisions
Learning outcome 4: Recognise and use Computer Aided Design & Manufacture and evaluate their implications for successful manufacture
Learning outcome 5: Interpret the use and significance of Automation and Robotics in manufacture and evaluate their implications for successful manufacture
