Assignment Help Civil Engineering
Reference no: EM131781725

Aim - To assess the knowledge and understanding of the students related to theoretical and practical aspects of the Engineering Mechanics, enhance their capability in analytical skills.

Objective -
1) To analyse force systems for determination of unknown forces.
2) To develop an understanding of statically determinate beams for reactions.
2) To analyse statically determinate plane frames and trusses.

Tasks Expected:

Task 1:

Quiz will be conducted to test the analytical skills of the students related to the module. Quiz will be prepared covering the following topics:
1. Resolution of forces
2. Concurrent Forces/Parallel Forces
3. Resultant of forces

Task 2: Assignment
Student will be required to submit an assignment to examine their knowledge related to the following topics:
1. Laws of forces
2. Conditions of Equilibrium
3. Support Reactions
4. Analysis of truss frames

Answer the following

Questions:

1. Determine the support reactions for the simply supported beam having length 6 meters (Figure 1). The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of (2+R) kN/m acting at a distance of 1m from the Left Hand Support and a point load of (1+R) kN at the mid-span.

2. Find out the support reaction and member forces in members AE, EF and BF of the truss shown in Figure 2.

3. The resultant of two forces when they act at right angles is (10+R) N, whereas when they act at an angle of 60° the resultant is (148+R)0.5. Use Law of Parallelogram of forces to determine the magnitude of unknown forces.

4. A lamp weighing (10+R) N is suspended from the ceiling by a cord A (Figure 3). It is pulled aside by a horizontal cord (B) until the cord (A) makes an angle of 60° with the ceiling. Find the tension in both cords A and B (i) analytically and (ii) graphically.

5. The cylinder and pulleys arrangement is used to support two blocks as shown in Figure 4. Determine the inclination (θ)of force P with respect to horizontal axis and the normal reaction Ry between cylinder and smooth horizontal surface, if the force system is in equilibrium. Assume that the pulleys are frictionless.
