Suppose blue light (wavelength = 0.45 um) from the sun struck an ocean surface with an angle of incidence theta(i) = 30°. Recognizing that nr = 1.33 and ni = 1x10-9 for blue light in the ocean, nr = 1.0003 for blue light in the atmosphere, and Tsun = 6000 K:

a. If 30% of the sun's light is lost to scattering and absorption by the atmosphere, determine the intensity of blue light

i) transmitted through the ocean surface, and

il) 15 m past the ocean surface along the direction of propagation.

Hint: for (a), assume that the total reflection of radiation by the ocean surface is represented as the average of that at horizontal and vertical linear polarization.
