An un-stretched spring initially is attached to a horizontal piston (round shape). Heat is added to the gas until the pressure in the cylinder is 400 kPa. The initial volume (V1) is 0.5 liter. Determine the initial state and the end state of the gas (use pressure and volume as the two properties). Do you think that the process is quasi-equilibrium? What is the key factor that would determine whether the process is quasiequilibrium? First, suppose that it is quasiequilibrium, calculate the work done by the gas to its surrounding. Then, suppose it is a nonequilibrium process, calculate the work done by the gas to its surrounding. Do you think that the end state is affected by the process? Do you think that the temperature of the gas at the end is affected by the process? Use patm = 100 kPa. Assume that the rest of the chamber is insulated.
