Professors Phoenix and Schoenau are swimming lengths of a 25 m pool (ie. one length is 25 m). They decide to have a 300 m race to see who has to mark the GE 111 final exam. Professor Shi agrees to act as a referee. Shortly after the start, Shi notes that Phoenix is in the lead at a pace that will have him finishing faster than 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Later in the race, Shi notes that Phoenix is exactly one length ahead of Schoenau and alerts the two swimmers of the fact. Feeling confident, Phoenix immediately slows his speed by 20%. Feeling desperate, Schoenau immediately picks up his speed by 20%. The race ends when Phoenix and Schoenau finish in a tie with a time of 7 minutes. (Thus they both must mark the final.) Assume that both swimmers hold constant speeds both before and after their one change in speed. Without using a trial and error or iterative approach, determine the initial speeds of both swimmers in m/s.
