A laboratory experiment involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer from a water-soaked towel experienc- ing irradiation from a bank of radiant lamps and paral- lel flow of air over its surface. Using a convection correlation to be introduced in Chapter 7, the average heat transfer convection coefficient is estimated to be = 28.7 W/m2 · K. Assume that the radiative properties of the towel are those of water, for which =

(a) Determine the heat fluxes associated with convection, q"conv, evaporation, q"evap, and radiation exchange with the sky, q"rad.

(b) Do your calculations suggest why the concrete is wet instead of dry? Explain briefly.

(c) Is heat flowing from the liquid layer to the con- crete? Or from the concrete to the liquid layer? Determine the heat flux by conduction into or out of the concrete.
