The water is emptied from the container which is then filled with 245g of dry soil and the container is filled up with water. The combined mass of container, soil and water is 1125g. Determine the Gs for the soil.

2) Determine the settlement of a 2.2m thick clay layer when the vertical effective stress at the centre of the layer increases from 50kPa to 78kPa. The clay layer has properties Cc=0.5, Cr=0.1, Gs=2.6, an initial OCR of 1.8 and a dry unit weight of 15kN/m3.
