From an aerial photograph, one observes that on a level section of a (multilane) highway, 25% of the vehicles are trucks, 75% are cars, and there are 50 vehicles per mile of highway. The trucks travel at 40 mph and the cars at 60 mph. This highway also has a section with a steep grade on which the speed of the trucks drops to 25 mph and the speed of the cars to 55 mph. No vehicles enter or exit the subject highway sections (except at the ends). The flows on these highwaysections are stationary, which means that the flows on the level section are equal to those on the grade. Determine (a) the flow of vehicles on the level section; (b) the density of vehicles on the grade; (c) the percent of trucks on the grade as seen from an aerial photo; (d) the percent of trucks as seen by a stationary observer on the grade.
A water tank has a height of 120m, and its area of cross-section is 2000m. Water is released from the tank and the water level drops by 1 meter every minute. Find the rate of change in volume.
Three stock car drivers are racing around a circular bend. They are each circling the bend at different radii: r(1)=249 m , r(2)=255 m , and r(3)=261 m . At a given instant, all three are traveling at the same transverse rate of rotation
Describe the equation for charging a water tank. Use: H= 2m, A_s = 1m^2, density water = 1000kg/m^3, K = 2000kg hr^-1 Mass flow in = K t. Calculate how long will it take to charge completely the tank
An observer has determined that the time headways between successive vehicles on a section of highway are exponentially distributed and that 60% of the headways between vehicles are 15 seconds or greater.
A very small country has just gained independence in the year 2000, at which time its population was 1,000. The new country has a birth rate of 0.02 yr-1, death rate of 0.004 yr-1, immigration rate of 0.01 yr-1, and emigration rate of 0.005 yr-1.
The number of hours on each machine required to produce a product is given in the following table, along with the number of hours available per week on each type of machine. Assume that the company can sell everything it produces.
How accurately would each 100-ft distance have to be measured so that the 95% error would no exceeded +-0.24ft in a total distance of 4000ft
Water is at 9000 kPa and 300 degrees celcius and flows through a partially open valve. Pressure immediately after the valve is measured to be 600 kPa. Calculate the specific internal energy of the water leaving the valve. Neglect kinetic energy ch..
what are the factors affecting the hydraulic conductivity?
The atomic radius for iron has been measured to be 0.1241 nm. Determine the interplanar spacings for the (111) and (211) sets of planes
Estimate the machines production under these conditions using the travel time curves given in the Caterpillar Performance handbook.
a wheel tractor scraper weighing 100 tons is being operated on a haul road which is now packed. this tractor is traveling fully loaded up a 6% slope to the dump site which is 0.5 miles away. the return trip is level and is also 0.5 miles away.
