Discussion, Employer website's part 1.
The main objective of this exercise is to examine a variety of employers websites and determine the factors that make the employers and their respective websites attractive to potential applicants.
Identify a job and an industry they are interested in researching. This may be the job/industry for which you may have already researched.
Go to a major Internet job board (e.g., monster.com, hotjobs .com, or careerbuilder.com) and enter your target job.
Identify two or three companies that have posted jobs on the job board. Use the links to the employers' websites to examine the employers' recruitment pages. Report on the characteristics of these sites, guided by the following questions:
What are the major differences and similarities between the websites?
Can you tell by the website's presentation what target audience the company is trying to attract?
What kind of information is presented on each website (e.g., salary ranges, workplace diversity, realistic job previews)?
What aesthetic aspects of the websites are attractive to you (e.g., animation, pictures, interactivity)?
To what extent is it easy to get information about the job from the website? Does it seem easy to contact someone at the organization?
Can an applicant apply online?
Assignment, Employer website's part 2.
Using the sites from the discussion question, answer the following questions: ? What stood out as the major similarities and differences across these websites? ? Were there any websites that definitely would/would not have led you to apply for a job? ? Aside from using the employers' recruitment web pages, how else might job applicants use the Internet in their job search? ? How might employers use the Internet to learn more about potential applicants (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)?
