A rectangular material sample (2 in tall and 1 in wide) is subjected to a vertical tensile stress of 50,000 psi on its upper edge. The bottom edge of the sample is constrained from displacing in the vertical, or y, direction but is free to expand or contract in the horizontal, or x, direction. The stresses throughout the sample are uniform. Determine the displacement in the y direction at the top edge of the sample. Determine the displacement of the vertical edge in x direction. Assume that conditions of plane stress apply and E = 29,000,000 psi (steel).
