1. You need to determine the density of a regularly shaped block of wood and you have the choice of measuring the volume by the either of the two methods used in the experiment, displacement of water or direct mathematical method.
a. Of these two methods for measuring the volume of a solid object (displacement of water versus mathematical method), which would you choose to determine the most accurate volume of your wood block? _______________________
b. Explain your choice of method and discuss, in detail, any specific problems that you might encounter using the other method.
2. The volume and mass of an unknown irregularly shaped solid were determined in the lab with the use of a graduated cylinder for the displacement method. The following measurements were recorded:
Mass of cylinder with water: 24.51 g
Volume of water in the cylinder: 12.44 mL
Volume of water plus solid: 15.39 mL
Is it possible to determine the density of the solid object with these measurements? If so, explain your calculations. If not, what other measurement must be taken?
3. You need to identify the metal in a metal rod using its density. The density you determine does not match exactly with the standard values for the density of the metals. List at least three reasons why these values may not match.
4. Suppose that, during production of the metal rod, a small air bubble was trapped inside of the rod? Would this effect your density determination? If yes, specifically explain how or why? (including whether the density would increase or decrease and why)
