The "chunk density" method is often used to determine the unit weight (and other necessary Information) of a specimen of irregular shape, especially of friable samples. The specimen at its natural water content is
(I) weighed,
(2) painted with a thin coat of wax or paraffin (tn prevent water from entering the porn),
(3) weighed again (H; + WW), and
(4) weighed in water (to get the volume of the sample + wax coating remember Archimides?). Finally, the natural water content of the specimen is determined. A specimen of silty sand is treated in this way to obtain the "chunk density." From the information given below, determine the
(a) wet density,
(b) dry density,
(c) void ratio, and
(d) degree of saturation of the sample.
Beam AC has been cut at D, and the left section free-body diagram is shown. Calculate the internal resultant normal force N, shear force V , and bending moment at D, M. Use the sign convention for internal resultant loading in a beam.
Determine the preconstruction and post construction vertical stress imposed on the soil at a point 2 m below the center of the foundation area (assume westergaard conditions applied)
You open a 16 oz (1 pint) bottle of a carbonated soft drink that has a temperature of 5°C, then you get distracted and forget to drink it. You come back quite some time later and find that it has gone "flat," and that it has gotten warm (20°C).
calculate the amplitude F0 of the sinusoidal excitation force that is necessary to produce a steady-state vibration with a velocity amplitude of 10 m/s at resonance. what is the corresponding amplitude of the acceleration
A rectangular sedimentation basin will have a flow of 1.0 mgd using a 2:1 legth/width ratio, and overflow rate of 0.00077 fps, and a detention time of 3.0 hr. What will the dimensions of the basin be?
A volume of 0.3 m3 of O2 at 200 K and 8 MPa is mixed with 0.5 m3 of N2 at the same temperature and pressure, forming a mixture at 200 K and 8 MPa.
The 3.5-Mg engine is suspended from a spreader beam having a negligible mass and is hoisted by a crane which exerts a force of 40 kN on the hoisting cable. Determine the distance the engine is hoisted in 2.4 s, starting from rest.
Discuss the effects of stacking fault energy on the deformation of a ductile solid
A river with 400 ppm of salts (a conservative substance) and an upstream flow of 25 m^3/s receives an agricultural discharge of 5.0 m^3/s carrying 2000 mg/L of salts.
You are preparing a life-cycle assessment of different transportation options for getting from your house to work (10 miles each way). The options include carpooling with three or more people, one person in a car, bicycling, or taking the bus.
A cylinder with a 6.0 in., diameter 12.0 in. height is put under a compresive load of 150 kips. The modulus of elasticity for this specimen is 8000 ksi and Poisson's ratio is 0.35. calculate the final length and the final diameter of this specuman..
