Question: The curve above shows a sample differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) result that was generated during the characterization of a 4.3 mg sample of Hercules 3501-6 polymer resin material. This particular material characterization test was carried out with a temperature scanning rate of 20 K/min, so the temperatures that were applied to the material during testing in the DSC machine are also included in the figure. As can be seen, this thermosetting polymer material started to cure at around 320 K and the complete curing process was completed 14 minutes later when the material reached 600 K.
Evaluate this DSC test result and determine the following:
• Determine the degree of cure as a function of time α(t) using a graphical integration approach. As part of this you will need to estimate the temporal levels of heat generation rate from the curve without having the actual tabulated exact values.
• Plot the evolution of degree of cure (α) as a function of time for 30 second increments throughout this 14-minute process. As you know the curve will start with a degree of cure value of α = 0 at time 0 and end up with a degree of cure value at α = 1.0 after 14 minutes.
• Based on this single experimental result, what is the total value for heat of reaction HR for this material in units of J/g?
