Problem 1: A newly built tunnel will be connected to an existing bridge as shown in the figure below. The connecting roadway between the tunnel and the bridge starts off with a vertical sag curve(s) and continues immediately with a vertical crest curve(c) - there is no constant grade connection between the curves. PVC of the sag curve (PVC5) and PVT of the crest curve (PVT,) are given in the figure.
You are asked to design a vertical alignment that will connect the tunnel and the bridge. To do so, (1) you need to determine the highest possible common design speed for the two curves. and (2) calculate the stationing and elevations of PVC, PVI and PVT.
