Bidding and Estimating Structural Steel Assignment
The following pages detail the labor requirement to erect structural steel. A steel fabrication shop will provide the steel - ready to install.
The assignment is two parts: (use problem11.1)
1. Determine the amount of steel required, beams/columns, plates, clips and angles. Determine the cost of the steel delivered to the site.
2. Determine the cost of erecting the structural steel using the following pages as reference. Justify/explain your choices or assumptions.
Steel base cost: $73.50 cwt (beams & columns), $69.75 (Plates), $77.20 (Angles)
Fabrication: fabrication costs are a percentage of each item base cost
Beams/columns: 85%
Plates: 95%
Angles: 90%
Shop Paint: 7.5%
Shop Drawings: 10%
Shipping: $2.25/ton-mile - based on 20 tons per truck
Overhead & profit: Determine & explain
Each column base requires a base plate: 16 x 16 x 1½
Each beam has 2 angles on each end for connections. Assume these to be 10 inches long 2½ x 2½ x ¼
Column base plates are welded to column bases.
For beam angle connection pieces - 2 per beam end - welded connections.

Crane: $145.00/hr
Laborer; 21.97
Welding machine: $30.00/hr
Operator; $29.63
Forklift: $40.00/hr
Welder: $26.00
Foreman: $42.00 + truck ($15.00)

Problem 11.1 - The plan and elevation views of a five-story structural steel building are sown in the accompanying drawings. A column schedule is also given for building. All beams will be W14 x 125 with 20-ft span lengths. Estimate the cost of erecting the beams and columns using average rates from Table 11.1 and the type of crew and equipment, unit labor rates, and unit equipment rates as shown in Example 11.2.
