Problem 1.
A mixture of toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E) and water (W) is in a vessel at 380 mm Hg. Toluene and ethylbenzene are miscible and form an ideal solution however water is immiscible with the two and make a separate phase. The mole fractions of (T), (E), and (W) are 30%, 40% and 30% respectively.
a) What is the boiling point of the mixture,
b) Determine the composition of the vapor at boiling point.
c) Determine the Dew point of the mixture.
Problem 2.
A Feed stream to a flash vaporization (FV) unit contains water (30%, mole) and acetone. The feed flow rate is 1000 mole/min. The mixture is sent to a continuous flash vaporization unit at atmospheric pressure where 50% of the solution leaves the unit as vapor. The liquid stream from the flash vaporization unit is sent to a second FY unit. The liquid stream leaving the second unit contains 10% (mole) acetone.
a) Determine the composition of streams leaving the first FV unit.
b) Determine the amount of liquid and vapor leaving the first FV unit.
c) Determine the amount of streams leaving the second FY unit
d) What is the composition of the vapor stream leaving the second FV unit?
e) Calculate the total recoveiy of acetone from this process.
Problem 3
A mixture of propane (125 lbmole, K = 2.056) n-butane (200 lbmole, K = 0.925) and n-pentane (175 lbmole, K = 0.520) is at 200 psia and 200 F. Determine the phase of the mixture.
