Deformation in so-called torsional springs, such as in a mousetrap, is due primarily to bending of the wire in the coil. Let the force F be 0.5 lb and the distance L be 1 in. Let there be complete loops, each of diameter 0.25 in.; the wire itself has a diameter of 0.06 in. Estimate the deflection . Neglect the contribution of the short length of the wire at the other end of the coil. Hint: approximate the bending moment as constant in the coil and determine the change in rotation angle along the coil.
