A 5.2 cm × 3.8 cm razorblade is placed on the surface of a beaker of water. Though the density of the razorblade is greater than the density of the water, the razorblade floats because it has not exceeded the surface tension of the water. Thus, no part of the razorblade is submerged. When 52 staples are placed onto the razorblade, it sinks. Given that the mass of the razorblade is 0.59 g and the mass of a staple is 0.038 g, answer the following questions.
a.) At the moment the razorblade sunk, what was the total mass in kg? Include both the razorblade and the staples on it.
kg
b.) At the moment the razorblade sunk, what was the total weight in N? Include both the razorblade and the staples on it.
N
c.) Determine the area of the razorblade in m2.
m2
d.) The surface tension is the maximum pressure the water surface can withstand without allowing any part of the object to be submerged. By calculating the pressure that was being exerted on the water surface at the moment the razorblade sunk, you can get a good approximation for the surface tension of water. Perform this calculation.
