We have a process air stream that is 30 mole% dichloromethane and 70% air at 80 oF. The inlet flow rate of the gas stream is 2 liter/min at pressure of 1 atmosphere. The process stream is being sent to a condenser operating at 5 atm and 0 oF to recover the dichloromethane prior to recycle to the process. A pure dichloromethane stream is produced and the product gas stream will be saturated with dichloromethane at 5 atm and 0 oF.
A. Sketch and label process flow diagram for the condenser.
B. Determine the molar flow rate of the inlet gas stream at 80 oF and 1 atm.
C. Determine the vapor pressure of dichloromethane at 0 oF.
D. Determine mole fraction of dichloromethane in the gas product stream.
E. Determine the flow rate of the product gas and liquid stream from the condenser.
F. The immediate dangerous to life and health concentration for human exposure to dichloromethane is 2300 ppm (as tabulated in material safety data sheet, MSDS).
o What is the boiling point temperature for dichloromethane required at atmospheric pressure to achieve this saturation concentration?
o Would it be practical to use condensation as method to reduce concentration of dichloromethane in air to the required limit? Discuss.
