You work for a small health department in a rural county in the south of the United States. You have been asked to conduct a CHA to determine local public health priorities. Based on your years of service, you already know that the community deals with problems like teen pregnancy, infant mortality, obesity, and diabetes. However, you also know these problems affect different segments of the population in different ways. Young people have problems related to sexual health while the elderly deal with chronic diseases. There are vast inequities between Black and White sectors of the county. There are also religious beliefs that impact residents' perspectives on health and wellness. Before determining the health status and unmet needs of the residents, you will need to be sensitive to the cultural factors that might impact the quality of data collected. You will also need to consider ethical approaches to collecting data among youth and vulnerable populations. Finally, you know it will be important to include local stakeholders, such as nonprofits who already have access to the community.
