To simplify Goldratt's theory of constraints, think of a chain link. Each link in the chain has a specific purpose in relation to the system the chain supports. When an issue occurs to the link the problem could affect the rest of the chain if not monitored. As a result, the issue must be fixed, or the system cannot perform adequately. Unfortunately, managers often forget about the rest of the chain. In the delivery of health services, issues associated with this example of a chain link occur randomly, thus affecting quality and performance. Moreover, the main purpose of Goldratt's theory is not only to fix the problem in the link but to continuously monitor the other links for potential issues that may or may not occur. In healthcare, this is called continuous quality improvements (CQI). In three to four paragraphs evaluate your own work setting or area of interest and generalize an issue that was corrected, but other issues occurred because the processes were not checked. Then determine whether Goldratt's theory could have been used to eliminate or minimize the issue.
