Civil Engineering Design Project Assignment -

Assessment Description: You are required to provide a short report that involves relevant topics of the Road Drainage Design section of the course. Through this assessment item, your competency about the learnt components of a typical road drainage design project is evaluated.

Delivery Format: The main body of your report must be prepared in a professional format (i.e. typed, with no handwriting and the inserted picture taken by camera, while encompassed cover page, table of contents, design summary table, brief description for each step, design calculations and professional drawings; and should follow the same order of the tasks that have been provided below. The body of your report must summarise your design steps in a clear and concise format.

Tasks description:

Task 1 -

Determine the design discharge for the longitudinal (table) drainage channel shown in Figure 1 to drain the water from a 350 m section of a major road which is going to be constructed at 27.95 deg. South, 153.25 deg. East1 with a road width of 11 m and a shoulder width of 1.5 m (each side). Assume that the concentration time is 10 minutes.

Task 2 -

The above mentioned major road (shown with a thick black line in Figure 2) is crossed by a natural channel which acts as the main drainage infrastructure of the upstream catchment with an area of 0.45 km2 The catchment has a well-defined water course and consists of the following sub areas: 45% open forest, 35% dense vegetation, and the remaining farm land. Estimate the design discharge of the channel.

Task 3 -

Design an artificial channel to carry the flow just before the crossing of the abovementioned channel and major road (Figure 2). Assume a non-maintained trapezoidal section, a side slope of 1V:4H in an easily erodible, 25% vegetated soil with clean bottom and brush on sides.

Task 4 -

At the intersection of the above-mentioned road and the natural channel, a culvert system (longitudinally shown in Figure 3) is required. Design the configuration of the required standard box culvert(s) for the design discharge of 15.5 m3/s, and provide the drawings2 based on the information given below. As a summary of your calculation steps, fill the relevant parts of the attached design calculation form and insert in after the last calculation in this part.

The road crown elevation is 125.65 m and its cross fall (cross road slope) is 3%. The Allowable Headwater (AHW) is 15 cm below the shoulder height to avoid any potential damage. Downstream of the culvert, maximum allowable velocity is 1.5 m/s. The inlet invert height is 122.85 m. The culvert is 24 long and needs to be made of reinforced concrete with a height less than 1.9 m. The culvert entrance type is square edged with 50o wingwall flare. What do you recommend for the downstream protection? Provide the details if protection is required.

Note - All figures are attached.
