Question: This discussion post and the feedback you receive on it from your classmates and professor will serve as good practice for your Criminology Theory Application assignment, due in Week 7. In that assignment, you will encounter a number of possible scenarios and be expected to identify the crime, the underlying cause of the criminal behavior, and possible police responses.

A television show called What Would You Do? exposes people to various ethical dilemmas. A colleague tells a racist joke. A waitress speaks disrespectfully to a customer who has a disability. A husband yells at and threatens his wife in a public park. The show films people's responses to the behavior they've witnessed and then asks why they responded the way that they did to the behavior.

You'll have the opportunity to participate in this type of activity in this discussion post. Only here, rather than acting as a member of the public, you will be acting as a police officer.

Here is the scenario: You are dispatched to a local grocery store. Upon arrival, you find the store manager is holding a woman he claims tried to leave the store with a cart of groceries. You observe the cart is filled with loaves of bread, peanut butter, eggs, diapers, baby formula, cheese, and so forth. You ask the woman for her side of the story. She tells you she is a single mother of four children and has lost her job. She is on the verge of losing her home, and she needed to feed her children. She tells you she didn't know what else to do.

Identify the crime committed.

Based on criminology theories, decide the underlying cause of the woman's behavior.

Determine at least two possible police responses to the scenario that address the behavior and provide a solution to the incident.
