Problem 1: Historically the time reported as "sick leave" for white collar public service employees has been 8.5 days per year. An auditor is concerned that perceived mismanagement of change processes in the latest year have impacted on staff morale, and may well have resulted in greater sick leave. The auditor's activity showed that the reported sick leave for a sample of 50 employees in the year under review was 8.7 days, with a standard deviation of 1.2 days.

a. Test at the 1% significance level whether the statistics from the sample support the auditor's hypothesis that sick leave has increased.

b. Interpret the p-value in your output for part b. and say how this supports the conclusion

Problem 2: Management of a large university ran a pilot project to see if a new approach to presenting online subjects would lift overall student satisfaction. The pilot involved selecting a number of online subjects with large enrolments, implementing the new approach for the latest session and then running the standard subject evaluation survey to gauge overall student satisfaction. Historically the proportion of students expressing overall satisfaction with these online subjects had been 80%, however the survey results for the pilot indicated that 369 out of 450 students expressed overall satisfaction. Management immediately declared the pilot a success, as "overall student satisfaction in the pilot exceeded 80%".

a. Test at the 5% significance level whether the data support management's conclusion.

b. Use the appropriate macro output which could be used to test the hypothesis in part a. Include the resulting Excel output and verify that the output supports your calculations and conclusion in part a.

c. Use an interpretation of the p-value in your output for part b. in a brief statement that says in everyday terms why/why not management's conclusion was correct.
