Assignment:

Based on this scenario, answer the following:

Scenario: A small town next to a crude oil refining plant is concerned about exposures to naphthalene (CASRN: 91-20-3). Answer the following questions with the risk assessment framework in mind.

1. Perform an exposure assessment of Naphthalene given the information below. Your answer's units should be should be in μg/kg day.

-350 μg/L of naphthalene in tap water

- 70 kg female

- Drinks 2L/day

2. Compare your answer to the reference dose of 2x10-2 mg/kg day. Is this a problem? Why or why not?

3. The same pack-a-day smoker friend from your midterm exam is still taking medication which induces CYP P450. Assume that under normal circumstances, approximately 40% of naphthalene is metabolized by CYP P450 and bioactivated while the rest of it is metabolized by other enzymes. Should they be more or less concerned about the interaction of their medication with their smoking and naphthalene exposure?

4. A different friend (non-smoker) tells you they drink 5L of water per day that is also contaminated with 350 μg/L of naphthalene. They weigh 82kg. Is there any concern? Why or why not?
