Purpose - The purpose of this assignment is to help the student determine a plan for career and professional development that will include both short and long-term goals; as well as specific actions; which will help the student to attain the goals.
Course Outcomes - This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- Examine current nursing standards and practice.
- Explore ethical nursing practice responsibilities of BSN prepared nurses.
- Examine own professional goals within the context of the profession.
- Discuss models of organizational structure in nursing practice.
- Develop techniques for reflective nursing practice.
Preparing the Professional Development Plan
Before you begin this paper it would be a good idea to reflect on these questions:
1. How do you make sure you are delivering quality care?
2. What do you to continue your education? (Updated and current in your specialty?)
3. How do you evaluate what you are doing in practice?
4. What do you to help others in your profession? (Do you work and play well with others?)
5. Give example of how you work with.las an interdisciplinary team.
6. Review the code of ethics. How does your practice compare? Give some examples of how you practice ethically.
7. Have you conducted research? Have you changed your practice because of some research? (If so what, and did you decide to change after reading the research or just change because you were told to?) Do you think your practice is based on research?
8. Do you routinely refer patients to other resources? Are you cost effective in your care?
9. Are you a team player? Do you contribute to a healthy work environment?
Directions - First describe and analyze current professional behaviors using the ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Performance.
1. You will compare your current practice with the measurement criteria outlined by the ANA, showing reflection on your current practice.
2. Set five and ten-year goals.
3. Develop a plan to meet these goals and a method of evaluating progress toward goals, or allowing for revision of those goals.
4. The paper must include references both to the Standards of Professional Practice and to resources supporting the plan.
5. For example if a student plans to pursue graduate study at least one program should be cited with requirements and the professional literature should be cited supporting the need for nurses in the field in the future.
The length of the paper is no less than 5 pages and no more than 8 pages, excluding title page and reference page.
