Problem: Determine a diagnosis and offer a case conceptualization and a treatment plan for the scenario. Cedric is a 16-year-old African American high school student. Three months ago he moved to a new town with his parents and younger sister due to his father's promotion and job transfer. Cedric's old high school included students from many racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. At his new school, there are far fewer students that look like him. Cedric feels like an outsider. He has always been a quiet, serious, and somewhat introverted person. Although he usually has one or two close friends, he feels awkward starting conversations with others, and he hasn't mixed easily in larger groups. A good deal of activity at this new school takes place around sports and student government: two areas Cedric has had little interest in. Cedric also finds the new school's emphasis on presenting oral reports and participating in debates in front of the class quite daunting. Historically, he's become embarrassed and tongue-tied when he has to speak in front of others. Cedric becomes sick to his stomach before school, two out of five of the mornings per week, especially when he has a major test or an oral report due. He tries to stay home from school on days when he has dry heaves first thing in the morning, but he, his parents, and his school counselor worry about how missing school will impact his grades, as well as limit his social interactions with his peers.
