Description: Collaborative Activity

Students will be required to engage in an online discussion where each student will be individually assessed. This activity will critically explore strategic management theories and practices. An individual grade is awarded.

Detailed guidance

You will engage in an individually assessed online discussion with peers on the module that critically explore a management concept or framework and its applicability to practice. You will share knowledge and approaches by both affirming understanding and learning from others. Geographically dispersed and global learner base, professional and life history experiences will bring different cultural, international and professional perspectives to the discussion.

Task

Michael Porter gave the diamond theory of national advantage, which states that the features of home country are crucial for the success of an organisation in the international markets. Porter's Diamond helps to explain why some nations tend to produce firms with sustained competitive advantages in some industries more than others. Originally Porter was concerned with the question of why some nations succeed and others fail in international competition.

Drawing on research, evaluate the framework and its 'relevance' for understanding how industries and organisations in your country can achieve competitive advantages.

A good discussion should evidence excellent academic and practical application, a solid evaluation and reasonable analysis, showing evidence of:

- Key determinants of international competitive advantage that industries and organisations in your country may need to depend on to sustain its competitive position in international markets.

- Limitation of Porter's model on the basis of international competitiveness.

In facilitating this collaborative activity, your engagement will be assessed based upon participation, and quality of your work in the discussion forum, academic writing skills and original thoughts (see grading rubric on the next page).

Please note, this is not an essay but rather a discussion with your peers and thus you are expected to:
- Post your initial thoughts (400-500 words) by replying to the summative thread.
- Participate and engage substantially
- Post at least 3 or 4 meaningful and insightful responses to your and others in the forum (each response should be up to 150 words)
- Ask insightful questions that help you and others to learn
- Offer contributions based upon literature and your own practice or experience
- Contribute to the learning of the forum
- Engage in critically collaborative inquiry
- Promote critical reflection amongst forum members
