Two kinds of errors can occur when deciding whether or not to reject the null hypothesis, a type I error or type II error. In the type I error, as the researcher I reject my null hypothesis when it is true. A type II error occurs when I accept my null hypothesis, when it is false. This can happen when the research tools aren't reliable enough to detect differences between groups or categories.

What types of unreliable research tools or methods may account for this?
