Problem definition:
We want to produce a height-adjustable chair to be used in cafeterias/canteens/fast food restaurants. The target market is South Africa.
Figure 1 - The overall shape and features of the chair
The size, shape and mechanism for height adjustment have been decided after a market study by the marketing team. The chair shall overall look like the one shown in Figure 1. Its height shall be changeable by rotating the chair, and a power screw is to be used as the adjustment mechanism. The seat must be a flat round wooden disk with a diameter of about 33 cm. The height of the seat from the ground shall be adjustable in the range 59 to 75 cm. The height of the footrest shall be about 15 cm.
The chair shall be designed for mass manufacturing (approx. 50 thousand pieces in the next 4 years). The company wants to make most of the parts in house. Assembly will be fully done in house. The company's manufacturing and assembly premises is located near Pretoria, South Africa.
The factory is equipped with simple lathes, non-CNC milling machines, drilling machines, welding facilities, electroplating facilities, and heat treatment facilities. It would be desirable if the chair can be manufactured using these facilities with no need to procure new facilities/machinery. Jigs and fixtures shall be made in house as required.
To make it feasible to compete in the market, the estimated cost of production per piece shall be under 50 USD (~ 850 South African Rand).
Notes:
Solidworks software. (I will need the files for the same that I can use into Solidworks)
Report should contain:
Detail design with all the calculations, assumptions and decisions
Drawings of each part as well as the assembly drawing
List of required jigs and fixtures. Conceptual design of the jigs/fixtures need to be presented as well.
