Using readings, lectures and discussions develop a thesis that explains how three (3) of the following PNW topics we covered in class can be connected to, analyzed, and informed by the concepts presented by Scholte in his chapters on: Globalization and Commoditization, Globalization and State Sovereignty, Globalization and Social Inequality. Please use a minimum of two (2) Scholte Chapters for each of the PNW topics you choose.

  • The lumber industry
  • The fishing industry
  • Farm worker migrations
  • Tek
  • Nike
  • Globalization Protests
  • Alaskan Oil

The themes offered by Scholte in his chapters on globalization and commoditization can be connected to, studied, and informed by the lumber sector in the Pacific Northwest. The lumber industry is a global sector, with forests serving as global commodities chains. Because the timber sector is dominated by a few major businesses, commoditization has resulted in environmental deterioration as well as social inequality.
The notions offered by Scholte in his chapters on globalization and state sovereignty can be connected to, studied, and informed by the fishing business in the Pacific Northwest. The fishing industry is a global sector, with fish being traded on global commodity chains. Because the fishing sector is dominated by a few major businesses, globalization has resulted in overfishing as well as socioeconomic inequality.
The notions offered by Scholte in his chapters on globalization and social inequality can be connected to, investigated, and informed by farm labor movements in the Pacific Northwest. Agricultural worker migrations are a worldwide phenomena, with farm workers serving as commodities. As small farmers are being displaced by huge agribusinesses, globalization of agriculture has resulted in environmental damage as well as social inequity.

Step-by-step explanation

  • The concepts that Scholte explores in his chapters on globalization and commoditization can be related to and applied to the lumber industry in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), and they can also be used to perform an analysis and provide direction. Scholte examines these concepts in his chapters. The timber industry is an international one, and forest supply chains are considered international commodity chains. The lumber sector is one that operates on a global scale. The commoditization of forests has led to a worsening of the environment as well as social inequality as a direct result of the concentration of power in the hands of a relatively small number of multinational businesses within the industry.
  • This has resulted in the commoditization of forests. The concepts that Scholte explores in his chapters on globalization and state sovereignty can serve as a foundation for linking, evaluating, and gaining knowledge into the fishing sector in the Pacific Northwest. Fish are a component of supply chains that span the entire planet, and the fishing industry is a global operation in and of itself. The globalization of the fishing industry has led to an increase in both the rate of overfishing and the rate of social inequality.
  • The migration patterns of farm workers in the Pacific Northwest can be linked, evaluated, and illuminated with the help of the principles that Scholte presents in his chapters on globalization and social injustice (PNW). Both migrations of farm laborers and farm laborers themselves are commodities that are traded all over the world. This phenomenon occurs everywhere in the world. Agriculture, as a result of globalization, has led to the displacement of many small farmers by huge agribusinesses, which in turn has contributed to the destruction of the natural environment as well as to social inequality. Additionally, agriculture has been a contributor to the rise of social inequality.
