Web Design and Database Application - Web Project
Learning Outcome 1: Apply HCI principles in designing website to meet user requirements.
Learning Outcome 2: Develop website using web development tools to meet user requirements.
Learning Outcome 3: Perform usability and user acceptance testing to verify the suitability of the website.
Aim
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to design and create robust websites implementing HCI principles and usability tests to meet user requirements. Students will also learn the knowledge of database fundamentals and implement a database application to solve business problems.
Purpose
The purpose of the assessment is to design and develop a website to solve a problem by creating personas, sketches, wireframes, or prototypes to design and realising the design by creating the website using appropriate tool.
Assessment Information
1. This is an individual open-book assessment to be completed in an agreed environment which is worth 50% of your total weighting of the entire course.
2. This is a resource-based assessment. This means that you may have access to any relevant resources to assist you. This could include, for example, you're learning materials, information on the internet, and so on. However, all work must be your own with no help from any other person.
3. To achieve a pass in this assessment you will need to score a minimum of 50% for the whole assessment
Scenario.
Natures Energy Ltd, is a new start up business which are offering renewable energy solutions for new build and existing homes on the North Island of New Zealand, offering solar panels, wind turbines and hydro solutions.
Having relied on traditional marketing methods, printed materials, they have concluded that they need to look at getting a presence on the internet, and they have contracted you to design a website solution for them.
They have requested that the website has the following pages, Home, About Us, Contact Us, Solar solutions, Wind solutions, Hydro solutions.
The website must have the same appearance on the 3 major web browsers, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox.
You will need to design and create the website to meet their requirements.
Task 1: Create a plan for the website
Create a plan for the website solution which outlines how the requirements of the scenario will be met. The plan needs to include at least all the following information, in keeping with the requirements of the scenario.
• The purpose of the website
• The target audience for the website
• Constraints for the website provide a minimum of 3 constraints
• Specifications for the website i.e., What will the website consist of
• Testing procedures to ensure that, a minimum of 6 tests
o The website is accessible, readable, legible, well-presented, and functional correct
o All requirements of the scenario, stakeholder, and good practice are met
• Resources required to complete the project, at least 3 resources
Task 2: Create a conceptual design
Create a conceptual design for the website that clearly indicates what the final website will look like and do, functionality
You must include:
• A persona: that has been generated for the project. They need to reflect the relevant users of the system, include the following, as a minimum
o Persona name
o Photo
o Demographics such as gender, age, location, marital status, family
o Goals and needs
• A UI design for each page of the site, sketches, or mock-ups, both low & high fidelity, showing the following
o Page layout i.e., the positioning of text, graphics, and other elements on each page
o Formatting e.g., use of colour, border styles, background colours and styles, etc
o Typography e.g., typeface or web fonts to be used, font size, line length, line spacing, letter- spacing, spacing between letter pairs, font colours, etc.
• Sitemap: showing the relationship between pages on the website
Task 3: Create the website using web development tools
Lo2: Develop website using web development tools to meet user requirements.
In this part of the assessment, you need to create the website that you planned and designed, using HTML/CSS or a Content Management System.
When you create the website, make sure that you do the following.
• Enter, edit, and format all content in accordance with the design specification of the scenario.
• Select and integrate the required media e.g., still images, video, audio, etc in keeping with the requirements of the scenario.
• Consistently apply the principles of effective webpage layout and of information presentation.
• Create a menu system which links to all the pages, as per site map.
• Font's face is consistent across the pages.
• Each page is consistent in appearance with the others.
• Text and Image placement - text and images are placed in accordance with the UI design
Task 4: Test and evaluate the website
Lo3: Perform usability and user acceptance testing to verify the suitability of the website.
In this part of the assessment, you need to provide evidence that you have tested and evaluated the website you created.
In accordance with your plan and the requirements of your scenario, and stakeholder(s), you need to undertake testing and evaluation of the UX, following aspects of the website.
• Readability. The content of web pages can be read easily, and the background, colours, and layout do not interfere with readability.
• Presentation. The overall look of the website is appropriate to its purpose and target audience, and important information is clearly presented, including the layout, styling, and media display correctly on each of the specified devices, platforms, and browsers.
• Functionality. All pages, graphics, links, and enhancements function according to the requirements of the scenario, and the website is suitable for live use.
• Cross browser. This includes ensuring that the website operates as expected in different web browsers, e.g., Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome), and mobile devices (e.g., mobile phone, tablet)
