Chapter 8 Designing Adaptive Organizations
This chapter describes all of the components of the function of organizing, including creating jobs. When managers incorporate the Job Characteristics Model (JCM) in job design, they attempt formulate jobs in ways that motivate workers and lead to positive work outcomes. You will evaluate a personal work experience according to the characteristics of this model.
Think about one job that you have had. This could be a part-time or full-time job, internship, or even a volunteer position. If you have not held a job yet, then you will need to think about a job you would like to have upon graduation. In that case, you will need to gather information about this job by looking for job advertisements, descriptions, and specifications that provide information about what one would experience in that position. You could also speak directly to someone that works in that position to gain knowledge from them.
Once you have chosen a job to evaluate, consider your experiences (or what you would experience, if discussing a future job) while performing the job with regard to the skills you used, your degree of involvement in the entire work process, knowledge of the impact of the job on others, amount of freedom and discretion you had, and how much information you received about your performance by virtue of doing the work.
For your initial posting in this forum, first provide a brief description of the job you are choosing to evaluate. Next, indicate whether you believe this job would score low, moderate, or high on each of the five job characteristics of:
Skill variety
Task identity
Task significance
Autonomy
Feedback
Make sure to provide reasoning behind your assessment of each of the five characteristics for this job so that others can understand your rationale. You are the expert on the job you are discussing because you are the one who has performed it or otherwise done the necessary research to know about the experience of one performing it! Provide experiences and examples to back up your assessment.
You should also indicate the degree to which you think the job provides internal work motivation (motivation from the job itself rather than external rewards) to the person performing it. Remember, internal work motivation is derived from your perception that the job itself is rewarding, not compensation.
