Design Project -
Introduction:
You work for a company that manufactures wood chipping machines. A new model has just been released, powered by a 25 horsepower electric motor (previously the largest model produced by the company featured a 20 hp gasoline engine). It has been identified that the previous design routinely suffered failures at the output shaft, so particular attention must be paid in the new design. The wood chipper machine is subject to mostly low amounts of shock, with occasional moderate shock when nails and other metal accidentally pass through the chipper. Use the Power Transmission Case Study (Section 18 in Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design) as a basis for the procedure of the design. The project should be completed individually or in a group of two.
Assignment:
Design the output shaft (with specifications of the related components including the spur gear and the rolling element bearings) for the gear train. The specifics for the application are as follows:
Notes:
Special Note:
Stress analysis and deflection checks are not required for this design project; however they should not be neglected in real life design applications!
This the design project for the course Machine Design in Mechanical Engineering program. There is a similar case study example in chapter 18 that you can follow but be aware that "case study part 5&6 are not including in my project". Please be aware/notice that for the design project you are asked (required) to design the final output shaft ONLY (with appropriate gear and bearings). It is not necessary to design, specify, or spend any time dealing with the rest of the power train assembly (gearbox). You are responsible for designing/specifying a gear for the output shaft, which would require some thought as to the gear ratios in the power train, BUT it is sufficient to make a guess/assumption as to the number of teeth/ratio of the final gear and design for that specification. If this is unclear, please feel free to contact me through email or swing by my office. I have spoken to some of you and noticed you are designing more than the required components (i.e. the other parts of the transmission assembly).
An air-filled waveguide operates below cutoff. The operating frequency is 1 GHz and the cutoff frequency is 1.5 GHz. The power P is supplied to the waveguide at a point z = 0. How far does the power propagates before it is attenuated to 10-12 P?
Explain why an object-oriented approach to software development may not be suitable for real-time systems.
