DESIGN BRIEF

Design six non-objective compositions that engage the elements of line and shape, as well as the principles of design.

REQUIREMENTS

• Follow the instructions for each composition below.

• Sketch and develop 10 thumbnails for each composition.

• For each composition, select one thumbnail and develop it into a comprehensive, using either handdrawn or computer generated lines & shapes.

COMPOSITIONS

1. Usc only Solid geometric lines, various widths. Focus on Rhythm, Value, Composition, Texture.

2. Use Solid and Implied lines, geometric and organic. Focus on Figure/Ground relationships/reversals, give dominance to negative space.

3.Use multiple Squares, a Solid, an Implied, and an Irregular line. Focus on Visual Hierarchy/Emphasis, and Unity.

4.Use multiple Circles, a Solid, an Implied, and an Irregular line. Focus on Scale relationships, Visual Hierarchy/Emphasis, and Unity.

5.Use multiple Triangles, a Solid, an Implied, and an Irregular line. Focus on Scale relationships, Visual Hierarchy/Emphasis, and Unity.

6.Use a Square, Triangle, and a Circle as well as a Solid, Implied, and Irregular line. Focus on all the principles of design.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

You will turn in the following:

1. A comprehensive of all six compositions, all mocked up onto a 1S'ix20" Superblack matte board. See side illustration for mock-up specs.

2. Thumbnail sketches.

3. The following digital files will also be submitted:

MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS

• Size for cach composition - x 4", with a 3 point white frame all around

• Use only black and/or white

• Use layer dipping masks to produce clean edges around the square
