Assessment Item 2 - Creative or Editorial Portfolio

You are required to use InDesign CS6 to produce a design portfolio that comprises design items and a justification.

You will have the choice of two options: to design a creative portfolio, or an editorial portfolio. Your client is real (qldwater - The Queensland Water Directorate), and the campaign is real ('qldwater on tap'). Designs that meet an HD standard will be submitted to the client for review, and may be selected for use.

The aim for qldwater on tap is very simple:

Our goal for the campaign is to find a fun way to promote tap water as a healthier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to stay hydrated. We want tap water to become fashionable in the same way that bottled water companies have established their brands. We want to show that tap is simply the smarter option. Tap water can be served in beautiful bottles and glasses - much nicer than the plastic, single serve alternatives on the market.

Tap water is healthy (strict Australian Drinking Water Guidelines), it's cheap (about 600 times cheaper than bottled water!) and it's much better for the environment (less waste, less energy intensive).
OPTION 1: Client Brief - Assessment Item 2 - Creative Portfolio

You are to produce a design portfolio comprising a number of items for a non profit organisation wanting to promote tap water by using professional looking promotional / educational material.

This promotional material will be camera-ready and will include three items designed using Adobe InDesign CS6 (or CS 5/5.5 as a minimum) ONLY.

Design Items (Creative): You are required to produce the following:
An Editorial Spread (4 A4 pages, double sided, in two spot colours)
A Web Banner (159 mm x 67 mm, in RGB colours)
A Poster (A3 size plus bleed (if required), two-sided, in four process colours)

Logo: You will be required to design the logo for the 'qldwater on tap' campaign. You are required to create this as a two colour logo. It will be up to you to choose the colours you will use, and you will need to explain your choices in your justification.

Justification: You will also be required to write a 2000 word justification of your choices that includes your response to feedback detailing how you applied any feedback provided as part of the drafting process.

OPTION 2: Client Brief - Assessment Item 2 - Editorial Portfolio

You are to produce a design portfolio comprising a number of items for the 'qldwater on tap' campaign needing editorial to be professionally presented to clients.

This editorial material will be camera-ready and will include three items designed using Adobe InDesign CS6 (or CS 5/5.5 as a minimum) ONLY.

Design Items (Editorial): You are required to produce the following:
A 4 page Fact Sheet (2 A4 pages in two spot colours, non-facing pages)
An Infographic (2 A4 pages in four process colours, non-facing pages)
A Brochure (A4, three fold brochure, in four process colours)

Logo: You will not be required to design a logo for the organisation if you are doing the editorial portfolio, as you will use the organisation's logo, and you must work with the organisation's corporate colours and to their required corporate identity. You will need to explain your designs within these constraints in your justification. You will also need to leave space for the inclusion of council logos on your design.

Justification: You will also be required to write a 2000 word justification of your choices that includes your response to feedback detailing how you applied any feedback provided as part of the drafting process.

Submission

You must submit your electronic files as a Zip file online. Your local campus tutor may also request that you submit your electronic files on a CD for ease of marking.

The learning outcomes of this course specifically relate to the ability of students to be able to use Adobe InDesign CS. Submissions should be made in Adobe InDesign CS6, although earlier versions may be allowed in consultation with your teaching staff. You are not allowed to use other software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, or the 'Book' feature in InDesign. You will need to purchase the software if you are unable to access it via your work, home or campus environment. It is available via the CQUniversity bookshop at an educational price. The CD at the back of your Rydberg text is not the software for installation; rather, it contains material on which you will practise your use of InDesign.

Assessment 2 Rationale

Assessment Item 2 is an authentic task for a real client. The limitations, such as your ability to only use text and images, provided, and work with colour limitations are realistic. The outcome is that you will create a product using InDesign CS based on demonstrated application of design principles.

More details on task requirements are available on the course website, and students must consult this to obtain a full picture of what should be submitted to complete this assessment.
Materials

You may use the following materials ONLY for your design. You may use glyphs and graphic elements within InDesign, but no clip art or other illustration is allowed. These materials will be made available at the commencement of term.Creative Portfolio Editorial Portfolio
