OVERVIEW

This assignment provides you the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of an absolute rating system (specifically, a graphic rating scale) system from a design perspective.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the development and achievement of the following course learning outcomes:

  • Identify the key criteria for the design of an effective performance appraisal system.
  • Apply the principles of effective design to evaluate the effectiveness of a graphic rating scale performance evaluation system.

INSTRUCTIONS

Review the criteria for effective performance measures in the text [1] (pages 197 to 203). Specifically focus on the following criteria:

  • Validity (the degree to which the criteria are job-related and able to predict performance)
  • Reliability (the degree to which use of the system will produce the same results with respect to the employee's performance across time or when applied by different raters)
  • Fairness (the employee's perception that the system is fair in that the performance criteria defined are within the employee's control)
  • Practical (the system is not time consuming to use and produces useful feedback for the employee)

With reference to the sample graphic rating scale for a professor [PDF, 131 KB, new window], evaluate its effectiveness with respect to the criteria outlined on pages 197 to 203.
