Composite Steel-Concrete Structures
Assignment 1 - Design of Composite Beams
Design Brief
Figure 1 shows a schematic view of a carpark structure which is to be designed using three principal elements. These include:
1. Floor Slab
2. Secondary Beam; and
3. Primary Beam
Design each of these principal structural elements using the following design data and that which is relevant to your student number, provide in Table 1. Assume a 2 hour fire rating is required.
Floor Slab
Design a composite slab (please specify type of profile used).
• γconcrete=24 kN/m3
• Superimposed uniformly distributed dead load
• Assumed uniformly distributed live load
Secondary Beam
The secondary beam is to be designed as a simply supported composite beam spanning between primary beams, Ls m.
Primary Beam
The primary beam is to be designed as a continuous beam over two spans as illustrated in Figure 3, Lp m.
Ensure that you consider all possible serviceability and strength criteria for each of the elements involved.
Assume all columns are 310 UC118.
