Question: During formative evaluation, the human factors team collected some reaction time data in anticipation that location and size of buttons likely change in the final user interface for operating the autonomous system for self-driving cars.
The team is fixed on using the letter-sized (8.5x11") touch screen given various cost and space constraints. During the formative evaluation, the team discovered that the minimum time is 100ms for the easiest task of hitting a target. The design needs to optimize the placement of two identically sized, circular buttons - "confirm" autonomous driving setting and "engage" autonomous driving. The two buttons should not be closer than two inches to avoid confusability (i.e., accidentally pressing the wrong button). However, the placement and size should facilitate quick change in controls, specifically no more than 500ms.
Their current design for the two circular buttons is half-inch diameter and separated by four inches from center to center. However, this design requires an average reaction time in 900ms. Specify a design guideline that would satisfy the requirement. Show all work
