CIVL 0019 Concrete and concrete structure - Middle East College

Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of reinforced concrete design and concrete technology covered in the module.

Learning Outcome 2: In response to a relevant engineering problem, carry out calculations that lead to a solution, at the level expected within the profession of a new graduate engineer.

Assignment Objective

To analyse and design edge panels and edge columns of a flat slab (flat plate) for the given individual data

Assignment Tasks (min. 1500 words)

1) Submit a design report for this assignment on or before 16/09/20 (23:59) which will be assessed out of 100 marks and then scaled down to the assessment weighting. Refer to the marking grid for detailed mark distribution.

Questions:
1) Provide a critical note on the latest advances in concrete technology with emphasis on concrete durability and non-destructive testing. Note: critical evaluation of literature with CU-Harvard citation is important. - (min 500 words)

2) The floor of a G+4 building (Figure 1) constructed of flat slabs (flat plate) is 18 m × 15 m. The column centres are 6 m by 5 m and the building is braced with shear walls. The columns are square in cross section (refer to data in the Excel sheet). The variable load is 3.5 kN/m2.
Using your individual data and for the given floor heights (centre to centre), design
a) The second floor edge panels of the flat plate
b) The second floor edge columns Material properties:
Concrete: C30
Reinforcement (fyk): 500 N/m2

Note as part of their solutions, students are required to provide the floor plan
REPORT STRUCTURE
INTRODUCTION (max. 300 words)
In the introduction part of your report, you are attempting to inform the reader about the rationale behind your work. In other words, you are justifying why your work is an essential component of the module you are taking - Concrete and Concrete Structures (CIVL 0019). The introduction is written with the view of introducing the topic of your assignment and setting it into a broad context, gradually narrowing down to your learning outcomes. You may also state what type of approach you will be using in your assignment for the entire discussion of your topic. Suffice to write a maximum of one page introduction (half page is OK).

MATERIALS AND METHODS (max. 200 words)
This section also covers the data collection and analysis methods, such as computer models (software, if any), mathematical models, questionnaires, interviews, visual observations, document review, etc. Relevant material properties (grades of concrete and reinforcement) and calculations should be shown clearly.

DISCUSSION (min. 600 words)
The purpose of a results section is to present and illustrate your findings. Make this section a completely objective report of the results. The purpose of the discussion section is to provide an interpretation of your results and support for all of your conclusions, using evidence from your calculations and results, literature review and generally accepted knowledge, if appropriate. All evidences taken from the literature (i.e. research) needs to be supported by the CU-Harvard citation and referencing style. The significance of findings should be clearly described.

CONCLUSION (max. 200 words)
In academic writing, a well-crafted conclusion can provide the final word on the value of your analysis, research, or paper. Complete your conclusions with conviction! Consider the conclusion from the reader's perspective. At the end of a paper, a reader wants to know how to benefit from the work you accomplished in your assignment. Include the following in your conclusion.
• What are the consequences of the strongest idea that comes out of your report?
• What are the limitations of your data, methods, or results?
