Teacher Preparation for Instruction

  1. Determine the critical concepts, vocabulary, general understandings, facts, and so on that students need to gain from reading the chapter. Form content analysis.
  2. Make test for the chapter. Be certain that your test focuses on critical content and uses appropriate items to measure the content.
  3. Divide the chapter into teachable segments. Be certain that each segment represents connected discourse on a specific topic and can be taught in one class session.

Prereading Activities

Complete the following activities for one segment from earlier.

  1. Reread the segment of the chapter and list words that would be difficult to decode. For each of the words, tell how to introduce the pronunciation of the word (e.g., as a whole word; by precorrecting affixes; by indicating parts of the word).
  2. Select one critical vocabulary concept from the segment. Write an instructional script similar to that found in for teaching the vocabulary concept.
  3. Select another vocabulary concept from the segment. Design concept diagram that could be used in teaching the concept.
  4. Design concept map that could be used visually to present the critical content within the segment or within the entire chapter. Structure of concept map needs to match the structure of the discourse (e.g., hierarchy, diagram, compare-contrast, timeline, or process/cycle).
  5. For each paragraph or series of related paragraphs in text selection, write questions that could be used in the guided-reading procedure.
  6. Write example notes for your text selection using the indented note taking and the mapping styles.

Postreading Activities

  1. Form set of questions that students can complete after passage reading. Be certain that your questions focus on the critical concepts delineated in the content analysis.
  2. Create a series of examples that can be used in teaching summary writing. List the key points from selection. Next, combine related points into single statements and cross out the least important points. Then, condense points further by combining and deleting statements. Number the remaining points in a logical order. Finally, summary of the selection.
